USC Orthopaedic Surgery / Treatments / Achilles Bone Spur Removal

For patients with chronic Achilles pain who have exhausted all other treatments, surgery may be recommended to remove the diseased portion of the tendon. During the procedure, the doctor will lift the tendon off of the heel bone, remove the spur that is irritating the tendon and then reattach the tendon to the remaining bone. While the surgery’s success rate is high, recovery can take several months, and it can take up to two years for patients to return to pre-surgery activity.
