Bunion removal, or a bunionectomy, is surgery to remove a bunion. Your doctor may recommend this procedure after other therapeutic options are exhausted. It is also a common treatment for patients who have bunions that make it painful or impossible to walk.
During surgery, your doctor may remove part of the metatarsal head, the bump along the inside of your foot, to realignment the foot bones. The joint may be fused and, if needed, an artificial joint may be implanted.
