Our Program

The USC Performing Arts Medicine Center at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles provides care for musicians, dancers, theatrical performers, stunt professionals and other performers. The center’s mission is to return performers to their craft as soon as possible.

We will evaluate performers with time-sensitive injuries quickly. The center is staffed with orthopaedic surgeons who have specific expertise in all parts of the body, including the hand, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, foot, ankle and spine. Some common conditions treated include metatarsalgia (inflammation of the ball of the foot), sprains, labral tears in the hip, tendonitis in the knee, stress fractures, herniated disc, trigger finger and strained muscles. Most cases can be handled without surgery, such as with physical therapy.

We treat musicians in the Los Angeles Philharmonic and dancers in the Los Angeles Ballet. We are also the musculoskeletal care providers for the performing arts students at the USC Thornton School of Music and the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. USC performing arts students who have a musculoskeletal problem directly related to their performance as an artist can call the special hotline number established to expedite their care at (213) 821-6950. The hours of operation for this number are Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Our Approach

Our experts provide the same level of commitment to our patients that our patients devote to their craft. We at Keck Medicine of USC understand the education, training and nutrition required to be a performer. The targeted approach we provide to all performers is based on their specific discipline. For example, this approach extends to addressing the unique needs of professional dancers of specific dance genres from jazz to ballet to help diagnose conditions or injuries.

Additionally, our surgeons collaborate with leading physical therapists, including some who are not only board-certified in orthopaedic clinical specialties, but also have degrees in music.
